Meet Our Physicians

Brian P. Hearon, M..D., FACC, FACCP, FSCAI
A co-founder of Hickory Cardiology Associates, Dr. Hearon received his under-graduate degree at Millsaps College in Mississippi. He then went on to receive his medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical School. Dr. Hearon completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the Medical College of Ohio. After concluding his cardiology fellowship at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dr. Hearon opened Hickory Cardiology Associates with his partner, Dr. Brian Steg. Special interests include: cardiac ultrasound, diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization, and pacemaker implementation.

Brian D. Steg, M.D., FACC, FACP, FSCAI, FCCP
A co-founder of Hickory Cardiology, Dr. Steg received his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. His internship, residency and fellowship were completed at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. Dr. Steg is board certified in Internal Medicine, Interventional Cardiology and specializes in the treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease.

Derek J. E. Luney, M.D., FACC
After receiving his undergraduate from Guilford College, Dr. Luney went on to complete his masters in Physiology, and then earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. His internal medicine internship and residency were completed at the University of Alabama. Dr. Luney served as Chief Vascular Fellow while finishing his fellowship at the University of Alabama. He is board certified in Cardiology with special interests in cardiac ultrasound and diagnostic cardiac catheterization.

Ralph N. McDonald, M.D., FACC
Dr. McDonald received his undergraduate and medical degree at West Virginia University. After completing his internship, residency and fellowship at West Virginia University Medical Center, Dr. McDonald stayed on to serve as Instructor of Medicine in the Cardiology Section. Dr. McDonald specializes in the treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease as well as diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization.

Carl T. Lomboy, M.D., FACC
Dr. Lomboy began his college education as an early admissions student after his junior year of high school. After completing a year at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, he transferred to the University of Virginia where he earned his undergraduate and medical degree. Dr. Lomboy’s internship was completed at The University of Connecticut Health Center. He then went on to complete internal medicine residency at the Allentown Affiliated Hospitals in Allentown, PA. While fulfilling his cardiology fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital, Dr. Lomboy served as Interventional Cardiology Fellow then Chief Cardiology Fellow before joining Hickory Cardiology Associates in 1993. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Interventional Cardiology. His special interests include cardiac ultrasound, cardiac catheterization and is completing training for treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease.

Sanjay Patel, M.D., FACC
As a resident of Indiana, Dr. Patel received his undergraduate at DePauw University graduating with Honors Cum Laude. He then went on to earn his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing residency at Indiana University and cardiology fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Dr. Patel received Interventional training at the Indiana Heart Institute at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Interventional Cardiology. Special interests include: nuclear cardiology, cardiac ultrasound and cardiac catheterization.

Steven M. Isserman, M.D., FACC
Steven M. Isserman, MD Dr. Isserman received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Miami in Florida. His internship and residency were completed at Harvard University, Mount Auburn Campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts followed by a fellowship in Cardiology at Tufts University New England Medical Center in Boston. He has been in private practice since 2003 with interests including: nuclear cardiology, cardiac ultrasound, diagnostic cardiac catheterization and sleep medicine.

Andrew M. H. Ross, M.D., FCCP, FRS, MBA
A native of Australia, Dr. Ross received his undergraduate at Radley College and medical school education at Guy’s Hospital in England. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Rochester in New York. While serving as a member of the Cardiology Staff at Brown University, Dr. Ross completed his Masters in Finance at Bryant College. He has been recognized by the Fellow Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom, Fellowship of American College of Chest Physicians and was a member of the Royal College of Physicians while serving as Senior House Officer at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Dr. Ross holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Critical Care and has special interests that include: nuclear cardiology, cardiac ultrasound and pacemaker implantation.

Upon receiving his undergraduate degree at Miami University in Ohio, Dr. Miller went on to earn his medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio. His internship and residency were completed at Akron General Medical Center followed by a fellowship at Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania. Dr. Miller is board certified in Interventional Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology. His special interests include: nuclear cardiology, cardiac ultrasound, and diagnostic cardiac catheterization.

Johnny R. Dy, M.D., FACC
Interventional and Non-Invasive Cardiology
Johnny Dy, MD  Upon receiving his undergraduate from University of the East in the Phillipines, Dr. Dy received his medical degree from De La Salle University in Manila, Phillipines graduating with honors Cum Laude. He completed his first internship at Philippine General Hospital, and then went on to complete a second internship, residency, a cardiology fellowship and interventional cardiology fellowship at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Dy is board certified in Cardiology with special interests including: nuclear cardiology, cardiac ultrasound, diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization, peripheral vascular disease therapy and catheter-based therapy. Western Piedmont Heart Centers welcomed him in 2002.

Sara Paul, RN, MSN, FNP
Director, Congestive Heart Failure Clinic

Upon receiving her undergraduate degree in nursing from Florida State University, Sara went on to earn her Masters degree in Cardiovascular Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sara then completed the Family Nurse Practitioner Program and is certified with the American Nurses Credentialing Center. After 15 years spent fulfilling multiple leadership roles at the Medical University of South Carolina including ten years as a Clinical Assistant Professor, Sara was asked to join our practice to coordinate and develop the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic of which she currently serves as Director. In 2003, Sara was presented with an award for Cardiovascular Nursing Excellence in Clinical Practice by the American Heart Association. She is nationally recognized as a consultant and speaker for cardiovascular disease.

Cardiac Electrophysiology
Dr. Wiley received his undergraduate degree from West Point and earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. His internship, residency and fellowship were completed at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC. While in practice at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he served as the Assistant Chief of Cardiology and the Director of Electrophysiology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Electrophysiology and has 11 years experience with all aspects of electrophysiology to include ICD management and complex ablation.

Justin received his undergraduate in Biology from Campbell University in North Carolina. He then went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the College of West Virginia. Hickory Cardiology welcomed Justin to the practice in 1999 and serves as Physician Assistant Leader.

Wesley N. Reid, PA-C
Wesley received his first undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and then a second degree in Nursing, both from Lenoir-Rhyne College. He then went on to East Carolina University where he earned his degree in Physician Assistant Studies while serving as North Carolina Student Director Board Member representing the ECU PA Program. Upon completion of his Master of Health Sciences degree from Duke University in 2001, Wesley was welcomed into Hickory Cardiology. He is a member of the American Association of Physician Assistants, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honors Society and serves as an American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor.

Graduating with honors Cum Laude, Jennifer received her undergraduate degree in Preprofessional Biology at Appalachain State University. She then went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Physician Assistant Studies from East Carolina University, once more graduating with honors, Magna Cum Laude. Jennifer earned her master’s degree in Health Sciences at Duke University. She is certified with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Jennifer was welcomed to the practice in 2004.

Derek E. Bost, PA-C
Derek received his undergraduate degree in Emergency Medical Care from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. After practicing as an EMT-paramedic for four years in Charlotte, NC, Derek went on to earn a second bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Derek originally began with the practice in 2002, and, in 2005, began seeing patients in the primary care setting. Dr. Eric Chuang and Dr. Johnny Dy welcomed Derek’s return to the Lenoir location of Western Piedmont Heart Centers in 2008.

Upon receiving an Associate’s Degree in Nursing at Western Piedmont Community College, Janice went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at UNC-Charlotte, a Masters Degree in Nursing Administration at UNC-Greensboro and finally her Post Masters Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. She is a Cardiac Associate Member of the American College of Cardiology and serves as a Preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students enrolled with Western Carolina University, Winston Salem State University and Duke University. Janice has over twenty five years of experience as a Critical Care and Mid-Level Provider. The practice welcomed Janice in 2007.
